This is the story of a man named Alex, who wanted more out of life. He loved to do crazy things as a small child growing up in Southern Indiana. That seemed to come naturally in a home where there were nine boys and four girls. Being out in the country always gave him a sense of freedom. His love for traveling came from his dad because even though he was born, lived, and died within a three-mile radius, his father had embraced every opportunity to travel all over the world.
When he graduated from college Alex convinced three of his friends to hitchhike with him across Africa. They set out from Cape Town and went all the way to Cairo, Egypt. This experience exposed him to a lifestyle that was free and simple and which caused him to realize that there is whole other world out there just waiting to be explored.
Alex went on to become a successful trader, but he reached a point where he no longer wanted that life. He was living in his van, not because of poverty but because he wanted to save money to pursue his dream. All Alex’s friends knew that he was an unusual person, so when he told them about his plans to buy a boat and go sailing, many of them offered to help.
On December 30, 2008, at the age of 25, Alex Rust left his home in the Midwest in order to sail in search for the meaning of life. He had no previous experience and almost no clue about what sailing really consisted of, but that only paved the way for some amazing adventures.
His girlfriend at the time and another male friend were his traveling buddies. When they left Fort Lauderdale on their way to Bimini they had no emergency kits and no maps. They made it to many Caribbean islands that year.
When Alex reached Curacao, he was ready to cross the ocean. He wanted more of that experience of freedom. So he sold his boat there and started looking for another one that would be better suited for his new plans.
And then he found Bubbles in Tortola. She was a 39-foot boat and exactly what he needed to get the job done.
