For millions of young Americans, the conflict between real and fashionable images of the body can be a matter of life or death. Anorexia has the highest death rate of any psychological illness; over a 10-year period, five percent of all patients will die. Complications can include low blood pressure, bone loss and damage to the kidneys, liver and heart.

This program will take you behind the scenes at laboratories and hospitals where specialists are experimenting with new approaches to eating disorders.

Released December 12, 2000. TV documentary from NOVA.
